The IEEE NPS Italy Chapter is pleased to announce the fifth edition of the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award in memory of Emilio Gatti and Franco Manfredi. The award will be presented to distinguished young scientists who have completed a Ph.D. thesis in the field of Radiation Instrumentation for fundamental and applied research.

Description: This award is given to distinguished young scientists who have completed their Ph.D. in the field of Radiation Instrumentation for fundamental and applied research. The prize consists of 500 Euros and a Certificate. Each year certificates will be also awarded to the two runners-up and will be awarded at an IEEE NPS Italy Chapter event.

Eligibility: Individuals who are member of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society at the time of application, have completed their Ph.D. in an Italian University or are Italian citizens who have completed their Ph.D. in a foreign University. and have defended their Ph.D. This year, taking into account the 3 months possible extension - due to pandemic - of the Ph.D. Program of Cycle XXXIII (Decreto Ristori, 18.12.2020, art. 21bis), the decision was taken to extend the eligibility period for the date of the thesis defense until June 15th, 2021. Therefore, to be eligible, the candidates must have defended their Ph.D. thesis in the period May 1st, 2018 - June 15th, 2021.

Selection Criteria: Nominees will be judged by end of September, 2021 by a Panel of three experts in the field of radiation instrumentation, to be appointed by the Executive Committee of the IEEE NPS Italy Chapter, on the basis of their CV, PhD thesis and publications.

Conflict of Interest: We take seriously to manage and solve any Conflict of Interest that should arise. The members of the Executive Committee cannot participate in the Panel. A list of prospective Members of the Panel will be formed before the nomination deadline. The final Panel will be frozen after the deadline. A Panel Member cannot have been the Ph.D. thesis supervisor of any of the candidates; a Panel Member recuses herself or himself in evaluating the candidate with whom she/he has coauthored scientific publications or has participated in a funded research program or whose PhD Thesis she/he has refereed. The Panel composition will be published on this website.

Deadline: The deadline for nominations is June 30th, 2021.

Instructions: Nomination packets are available here in pdf and doc formats and the completed packets should be submitted in pdf format via email to NPSit.phd.award@gmail.com and in cc to the NPS Italy Chapter Secretary, lodovico.ratti@unipv.it. Please specify "Application for Gatti Manfredi PhD thesis award - surname of the candidate", in the email subject. A document summarizes the rules for nomination.

Final Communication and Award Presentation: The winners will receive notice by end of October, 2021. The 2020 award was presented during an interesting event dedicated to recall the legacy of Emilio Gatti and Franco Manfredi that took place on December 17, 2020 via Zoom due to pandemic. The full program of that day is available here. An event will be organized in fall 2021 for the award ceremony.
